No More Wasting Food when Moving Home

No More Wasting Food when Moving Home

Moving home is a strenuous task with a lot to accomplish from packing your belongings to transferring utility services. In such an overloaded and stressful situation, you may forget to go through the food piles in your pantry that you just end up throwing food before moving.

Home moving should not be a reason to contribute to the global problem of food waste. At Tamam, we want to do our part to mitigate the wastage issue.

You can follow a simple step-by-step process:

Step 1: List the food items

You need to determine the types of food items you have in your home by creating an inventory of your food supplies.

Inspect your kitchen- fridge, cupboards, and drawers to see what you have and sort all the food content into different categories such as canned, frozen, refrigerated, boxed and liquid foods. You can also classify them as highly perishable, or non-perishable based on their expiry labels.

Step 2: Throw away

After segregating your food, chalk a plan to handle each food group whether to consume, donate or dispose. As expired food items are unfit for consumption, simply accumulate all the expired items in a bag and dump them in the nearby bins.

Step 3: Consume perishables

To eliminate food waste, the best thing you can do is to consume the perishable items.

Browse some interesting recipes and cook delicious meals to relish with your family after the episode of laborious packing. Finish the leftover ingredients in the fridge and mix or match it for mouth-watering soups or snacks. Limit your visit to supermarkets to buy perishable foods days prior to the move.

Step 4: Donate food

Lend food that you do not intend to carry along to families who need them. You can also ask you neighbors to check and take the food items that are useful to them. This way, you create a win-win situation by minimizing wastage and helping those in need.

Step 5: Pack the food you need

Utilize sturdy cardboard boxes to pack the canned and boxed food supplies. Liquid foods such as oils and juices need to be wrapped and sealed in plastic covers to avoid spills. Tape any open packs of rice, flour, pasta, cereals, sugar, other powdered or dried items and place them in Ziploc bags before you transfer them into boxes. Don’t forget to bubble wrap glass jars of sauces, jams, or pickles.

It is advised not to carry refrigerated foods for safety concerns. However, if you really need to take them, then move them in coolers.

Step 6: Carry meals for the move

Once you finish your packing, you can fit your bag with water, juices, sandwiches and other nutritious snacks to satiate your hunger on the day of the move and the day after. They serve as energy bites for the tedious task of unpacking and organizing at the new residence.

I hope you find these tips useful to ensure that there is no food waste the next time you move.
